Should You Exercise On An Empty Stomach?

If you workout first thing in the morning, you probably do it before eating a full breakfast.

There’s been an ongoing debate about whether it’s necessary to fuel up before going for that run or hitting the gym. Many studies say fasting before a workout helps you burn fat, while others suggest there’s some risk involved. 

However there is new evidence that an empty stomach makes a more efficient workout. There are some downsides, so should you exercise hungry or lightly fed?


CAN EXERCISING HUNGRY HELP TO BURN MORE FAT?

The answer seems to be that hungry workouts really can be more efficient.  ‘Training fasted’ (as opposed to ‘training fed’) seems to make the body burn more of its fat stores. If you ‘train fed’, carbohydrate is available as glucose in the blood and the body turns to that instead. Some small-scale studies are bearing out this theory.

There is even evidence that ‘training fasted’ can make your body more efficient for future ‘training fed’ sessions. These are the times when your body needs to make use of carbohydrate. Inability to do this efficiently can bring that ‘runners wall’ much closer, or give you a sudden dip in the middle of your weights or cardio session.


High Intensity Or Long Duration Exercise (>2 hours)

This type of exercise (HIIT, heavy weight lifting, crossfit) will use up stored carbohydrates and creatine phosphate. It will be hard to do if you do not eat before hand, and if you are very low in carbohydrates, you may use up protein / muscle as fuel (which you don’t really want).

If you do this type of exercise first thing in the morning, I would recommend eating something small and high in carbohydrates (such as fruit) prior to this workout. If you are exercising in the afternoon, I would recommend eating something high in carbohydrates and moderate in protein around 2 hours before. Some examples include yoghurt and berries, healthy sports bar or a piece of toast with eggs.

SO Is it Bad to Exercise on an Empty Stomach?

It can be a hotly debated topic: is it better to exercise on an empty stomach, or is not eating anything at all before a workout just setting yourself up for a lackluster performance?

Hence, if you perform any exercise, ensure that you grab some food before you do some exercise. And as always, consult your doctor first before you do any exercise or fitness program.

Don’t: Beat Yourself Up

In my experience, one of the main triggers of throwing in the towel is negative self-talk. Coming down hard on yourself for small indiscretions, like sneaking an extra square of dark chocolate, or taking a bite off your partner’s plate, can have damaging consequences, including emotional eating, or engaging in risky purging behaviors (e.g. compensating by undereating, overexercising, taking laxatives or diet pills, vomiting…). One exercise I often carry out with my clients is to compare how they talk to themselves to what they would say to their best friend if he or she were in the same circumstances.

Do: Celebrate Every Success

Most of my clients want to reward themselves when they hit their weight goal, perhaps with new clothes, a trip, or a spa service. But I encourage them not to wait. When you’re working on changing your lifestyle, there are numerous victories along the way, and each one should be honored. One client recently told me that it dawned on her that she automatically reaches for water over diet soda, and no longer misses her former daily fix—that’s a huge win! Another shared that her kids are now asking for fruits and veggies. A third remarked that everyone’s been commenting on how radiant her skin looks.

Don’t: Focus Solely on Your Weight

One of the reasons the “do” above is so important is that it creates a shift in perspective. When I’ve worked with clients who remain laser focused on weight, they’re often willing to compromise health for the sake of weight loss. For example, I’ve had really smart clients tell me they took up smoking, fully knowing the risks, as a means of losing weight. As a health professional that makes me very sad, and it’s one of the reasons why I talk to clients about things like mood, sleep quality, energy, immunity, digestive health, strength, endurance, and help them monitor health indicators like blood pressure, cholesterol, and liver values. I generally find that over time, all of these factors that contribute to wellness, become much stronger motivators than weight or size, because they so strongly influence day to day quality of life. When this happens, you may even decide to banish the scale altogether, which is incredibly freeing, because you’ll have far better—and less fickle—ways of gauging your progress.

Do: Find Positive Support

I hate to say it, but most of my clients have at least one person in their lives who either consciously or unconsciously sabotages their healthy efforts. It may be a significant other who doesn’t want to lose his or her partner in crime, so in turn brings home a box of donuts or a piping hot pizza. Sometimes it’s a competitive co-worker who becomes critical, or a family member who says things like, “You don’t need to lose weight.” A lack of support, even from those you’re close to, is a common conundrum for most people who’ve adopted healthier habits.

Don’t: Set Unrealistic Expectations

One of the biggest pitfalls I see is setting unrealistic expectations, either results-wise (e.g. I’m going to lose 30 pounds in 30 days), or behavior wise, such as vowing to work out seven days a week, or cut out all carbs. On the flip side, the lasting transformations I see—that is, people who lose weight healthfully and keep it off for good—come from focusing on progress and consistency, not strictness or perfection. You know yourself better than anyone else. If you can’t realistically see yourself maintaining a goal you’ve set for yourself one, three, or six months from now, modify it. When I ask my clients about their weight history, most tell me they’ve lost and gained back the same 20 or so pounds over and over again. And what finally allows them to shed it for good is ditching any approach they know that can’t stick with!

Here's a simple face scrub that works particularly well on oily skin, without the harsh chemicals of most acne washes:

1/4 cup fresh-squeezed lemon juice
1/4 cup water
1/2 cup rolled oats (which serves as an exfoliant)
1/2 tablespoon honey (to soften skin)

Mix it all up in a small bowl. Massage onto face for 30 seconds. Rinse with warm water.


2. Lemon cucumber toner

Another way to use lemons to fight acne and get happy skin is to make a soothing toner.

In a jar, combine 2 tablespoons of lemon juice, a half cup of cucumber slices, and 3 cups cold water. You can also add some lemon slices if you like. Apply with a cotton ball or pad. Keeps in the fridge for up to a week.


3. Lemon body scrub

Since lemon is good for your face, it's probably no surprise that it can be nice on the rest of your skin. Lemon oils are used in aromatherapy to fight depression and add a happy smell to DIY salt scrub. Salt scrubs are too abrasive for everyday use, and work best if you use them a couple of times per week. Here's the recipe:

Zest from 1 lemon
1 cup Kosher salt
1/2 cup almond oil

Combine the ingredients in a clean jar with a tightly fitting lid. Shake and it's ready to use! It's best to scoop your scrub with a spoon and not your fingers, so that oils from your hands don't end up in your scrub. It keeps for about 6 months at room temperature.

4. Natural highlights

There are lots and lots of chemicals in hair dye, which is why salon professionals use gloves and foil to minimize its contact with skin. If you want a cheaper and more organic approach to summery highlights, try the old lemon juice solution. Unfortunately, this works best on people who already have fairly light hair. 5. Hair rinse

Regardless if you're skipping shampoo or not, lemon juice can reduce the dullness created by hard water (and soap residue), leaving your hair shinier. Combine 2 tablespoons of lemon juice with one cup of warm water, and pour it slowly over your hair. Allow it to sit for at least a minute before rinsing out. Again, I'll make the disclaimer that this may not work for all hair types.

The top vote getter, the most searched term for an herbal diet pill or what the people think is the best fat burner is "ephedra".

Let me note a few things of interest.

More people searched for the term "ephedra" during the month of May, 2006 while searching for information on a weight loss pill or diet pill than any other well known brand or ingredient.

But what's interesting is, most people think ephedra is illegal or no longer available. Plus, ephedra is just one herbal ingredient in many fat burners.

Green tea, while it has many other benefits was not searched as often as ephedra which is considered illegal by many people.

This is also curious. The brand name Metabolife is a brand that is no longer around. The company has gone bankrupt from lawsuits yet almost 10,000 people a month search for this once great weight loss product.

Another interesting point is that the word "ephedrine" is actually a chemical within the herbal ephedra plant, but a large number of people are searching for this chemical.

Ephedrine is the major reason the herbal plant, ephedra, works so well and is considered the best fat burner, certainly among the general population of people searching the internet for weight loss pills or diet pills.

 That means keep your kitchen stocked with fresh and healthy foods, particularly snacks, so when you feel the urge to eat something, you have only suitable options around. Several smaller meals throughout the day will serve your ends far better than just 2 or 3 large meals. And don’t try and starve yourself. You’ll do no good to your new baby that way, and you’ll invariably find yourself binging sometime later on to compensate.

Have patience with yourself.

 The period of time following pregnancy is already exhausting and exasperating enough, on so many levels. Don’t burden yourself further with guilt, shame, and unrealistic expectations.

Shedding excess weight after pregnancy is not an easy task, but it can be done. Every body is different. Rather than comparing your rate of postpartum weight loss to that of any other new mother, focus on sticking to the slow and steady path to the long-lasting results you crave: a body that glows more than it ever did during or before you got pregnant.

Ask 100 different fitness experts this question, and you’ll probably get 80 or more different answers.  That’s one reason why fitness and fat loss gets so darn confusing-everybody seems to have “the answer.”

You’ve got 101 different theories about how to induce fat loss including super-slow training, heart rate training, circuit training, Pilates, yoga principles, high-rep weight training, and aerobics.

When it comes to nutrition, there are even more fad diets than exercise theories.  The Atkins Diet, The South Beach Diet, Eat 4 Your Blood Type, Low Fat, Low Carb, Low Calorie, The Zone…even Dr. Phil has a diet book.

Well, I’m going to simplify things for you. Work the whole body each session!  No tricky split routines, no bodypart training…just training the body the way it was intended to function, as a whole.

Human movement, stabilization, balance and strength are the results of a whole body approach to strength training.  Until recently, the fitness industry had forgotten how to incorporate the entire body in exercise programming.

The human body has over 600 muscles, all intended to work as one complete and complimentary system. Traditional exercise programs have neglected the majority of these muscles by training in a one-dimensional environment. This type of training handicaps the body from performing the way it is designed to function.

Training in a fixed plane environment leads to isolated results, muscle imbalance, and injury.  In contrast, the whole body approach to resistance training prepares participants of any fitness level to achieve great improvements in body composition and function better in daily life as well.  The three-dimensional environment of training movements, not individual muscles, enables the body to become efficient in both static and dynamic environments.  Participants achieve balanced, long lasting, effective results.

Full body training is an extremely effective way to loose weight as involves dynamic, whole body movement that increase caloric expenditure.  Training movements instead of individual muscles can also help change body composition by increasing muscle mass, increasing growth hormone output, raising metabolism, maximizing caloric output, and ultimately decreasing body fat.

Now, regardless of how great your workout is, food intake is the key factor that will either make you or brake you as far as fat loss goes.  The only way that the human body drops body fat is by being in what is called a calorie deficit.  This brings us back to LAW OF THERMODYNAMICS. Remember, I’ll say it one more time...this law states that if you eat more calories in a day than you burn you will gain fat, if you burn more calories in a day than you eat you will lose fat, and if you eat the same amount of calories in a day as you burn you will remain constant.  This is a law!!!!  It is as true as the law of gravity and it is how the body works.  Knowing this, it is simple.  If you want to lose fat you need to adjust you daily calorie intake so that you are into a calorie deficit.  You need to get your calorie count low enough to begin fat loss, but at the same time keeping it high enough to remain healthy.

 The second step to optimizing you food intake is by spreading your food out evenly throughout the day.  Ideally, you want to be on a five meal per day plan.  By spreading your calories evenly through five small meals your metabolism works its best for you.  When you constantly give your body food with small meals your body does not feel the need to store fat.  On the contrary when eating large, infrequent meals your body feels the need to store some food as fat for it is unsure as to when it will be fed again.  Get on a scheduled meal plan that your body will respond to.  Five meals a day, approximately three hours apart works great.  A healthy start point for you protein, carbohydrate, and fat ratio’s is 25% of you food coming from protein, 60% of your food coming from carbohydrate, and 15% of your food intake coming from fats.

Now, I’m going to give you an industry secret.  A lot of personal trainers out there are gonna be upset with me for it is too valuable to give away, but I’m going do it any way.  If you want to lose fat and you are unsure of how many calories you are supposed to eat and are not in a position to hire professional assistance, barring any medical conditions, a simple formula to follow is this.

Take your body weight and add a zero on the end.  Use that as your general guideline, split the number evenly among five meals per day and your body should be in a calorie deficit.  For example if you weigh 180 lbs, add a zero, your now at 1800 calories.  Divide that over five meals per day, your eating 360 calories per meal.  Keeping each meal balanced approximately 60% carbs, 25% proteins, 15% fat, you are eating in a healthy way to lose weight.  It works!!  Note, if you have any medical conditions always consult with your physician first. How quickly will you see results?  Although results will vary with each individual, full body training coupled with a proper nutrition program will help you achieve greater results than most other programs in less time.  The results can come quicker and be longer lasting.

The second part of getting in shape and losing weight is exercise. Again people start out with the best intentions I’m going to run 5 miles every day. However if you haven’t run a mile in more years than you care to admit, this is a recipe for failure. Set moderate and obtainable goals for yourself. First start out with walking one mile. After a few weeks start walking for two miles, then three. Once you can comfortably walk the 5 miles, start walking four and half miles and run for a half mile. Keep up adding to the length you run and subtracting from the length you walk. It may take 6 months or more for you get to that stage, and that’s ok. It’s not important that you succeed quickly, just that you succeed.

One of the biggest reasons people give up resolution to Lose weight is temporary defeat. Maybe they went on a vacation and gained a few pounds, or they had some big projects for work and haven’t exercised for a week or two, and what’s the point in starting back up again. When you start down the road to a healthier lifestyle realize there will be bumps and even a few dead ends on the way. Realize its ok to make a mistake as long as you get back on the right path again, and try not to repeat the same mistakes you did last time.
